Mark Rober is the idol for most creators. Over 50M subs on YouTube. Wicked smart content as a former NASA engineer. And he has launched the most amazing product CrunchLabs subscription boxes. I’m honored to announce that I will be speaking with his COO Jim E. Lee at Open Sauce (VidCon for makers and tech creators) in San Francisco this Friday at 1:40pm. Please join me as Jim and I do a fireside chat about his role as COO of CrunchLabs running operations for this impressive business as well as negotiating brand deals on behalf of Mark Rober as well as on behalf of CrunchLabs working with other other creators. Not only is Jim super brilliant, but also very kind. Tell me what I should ask Jim during our conversation. I’m excited to chat with a fellow COO was probably one of the most famous COOs out there for Youtubers. I function as a fractional COO for several large channels and I’m excited to learn from the master. ********Day 24/90 posting on LinkedIn.Challenge extended by Ana Juneja This is changing my life by the way, I’ve gained over 800 new followers in the last 23 days. Exciting! My kids are almost old enough for a subscription and, as a former manufacturing engineer, I’m so curious about box design and operations. Ask him how they manage inventory, any delays in supply or development, and customer complaints. How big is the box design team? Is every box ever different, or do they repeat every couple years? How do they manage to span age ranges while also staying within the chaos/safety tolerance of parents lol?

Pinching myself. What's my why?To protect creators because there are companies in the space that take advantage and creators sign agreements that they shouldn't.To support a whole generation of kids to create for the beauty of creating so they never have to wait for a studio head to deem their story worthy of being told. And help them grow their channels into a legitimate business, to 7-figures faster by building on their own land, capturing and growing their email list, and starting a paid community. Plus launching products like courses and goods. Taking equity in brands vs being a one-off salesman where the ROI is bad for them and the brand. And thanks Jon Youshaei for the inspiration. What happens if a creator defames somebody in a video? That’s a better hook, but this was the original first sentence for this post:Do creators need Media Liability Insurance?Yes. That’s the post. Okay just kidding.Let’s break it down. I just spoke to an insurance broker about a policy for a big creator client of mine. 1M+ subs on YouTube. What is MLI? It’s something that I recommend to my Creator clients who are media companies creating content. The policy will protect the Creator from third-party liability claims from defamation, copyright infringement, plagiarism, and invasion of privacy. I have another client who tricked his way into a huge celebrity’s house and then filmed content about it, then came to me and asked me if he could release the footage. I told him no, but he’s probably going do it anyway so I put guidelines and bumpers around how to protect him. But if he had Media Liability Insurance and this big celebrity sued him, then the MLI would probably protect (indemnify) him from this invasion of privacy claim. A lawsuit is likely to happen here. Sigh. Come catch my keynote talk VidCon (6/29 at 1:30 Room 207CD in the Creator Track) and I will talk more about that client’s story. As well as share all the biggest mistakes are creators make when setting them up their businessesAnd when they are negotiating their brand deals and management agreements. As well as share all the tips on how creators can get to 7-figures faster. I’m also speaking with Avi Gandhi on another panel. Date and time in photos. ********Day 26/90 posting on LinkedIn.Challenge extended by Ana Juneja This is changing my life by the way, I’ve gained over 900 new followers in the last 25 days. Death scrolling for social media is known to be detrimental to mental health. Tonight I joined a bunch of creators and mental health experts to talk about how creators can help open the dialogue around mental health wellness and creating mental health content. Also we as creators need to focus on our own mental health because content creation is a really tough profession. I said it. Content creation is a legitimate career and profession.Honestly, I’m having sort of a tough mental health week myself and I wasn’t going to go, but I’m so glad I went because I saw some old friends like Rob Ryan who I adore (we didn’t take a photo!) And new friends like Cassandra Bankson who is so smart and kind (BIG heart energy!). I am a huge fan! I bought my iRESTORE Laser (Freedom Laser Therapy) red light helmet because of her, and it has helped my hair to grow back! Kelsey Darragh who is such a badass and inspirational. Kelsey said that she wish she could make content about mental health all the time, but it doesn’t pay as well so we are bound to do brand deals that pay the bills. And we connected over being at BuzzFeed at the same time!!But if all of us creators could focus on making content about mental health and destigmatizing therapy, it would be a powerful movement. You in?Let me start. I have had years of therapy in my life, and I am so deeply grateful to my therapist who helped me leave an alcoholic ex-boyfriend after realizing that I could not save him. And helping me understand that my parents did the best they could. Even if that meant leaving me for two years in Taiwan without them and me thinking that they had left me forever. And 1000% if not for our couples counselor, my husband and I would not still be together. Thank you Shira Lazar and @thekinn for hosting. **********Day 25/90 posting on LinkedIn.Challenge extended by Ana Juneja This is changing my life by the way, I’ve gained over 800 new followers in the last 24 days. Do creators need managers? As we saw MrBeast leave Night Mediabehind, we are seeing that the biggest creators are bringing themanagement of their brand deals and sponsorship and in-house. But what about the smaller creators?I’ve handed my clients over to Jon Henson over at Underscore Talent Management and WME | William Morris Endeavor And they’ve been great. For creators to search for brands on their own would take hundreds of hours to figure out which brands actually have open campaigns or are open to working with social media creators.Find a good manager who believes in you and who cares about your future and helping you diversify your revenue streams. 16 years in Hollywood and I was often the only female executive.Of color. Now that I am in the creator space, I am happy to see more creators of color.Especially Asian creators. We were always taught to be quiet and so to see creators on camera and as talent...delights me.And fills me with hope that my kids will grow up and be able to create (or work) in a space filled with people who look like them.I am so honored to be on of the mentors of the Tower 28 Beauty, Inc. Clean Beauty Summer School (CBSS) supporting these amazing minority founders and creators. Thank you Amy Liu for inviting me into this wonderful community of beauty founders.CBSS is a 10-week virtual professional development program led by experts in the beauty space with the mission of accelerating the careers of minority founded beauty brands. We believe the world is a more equitable and beautiful space when all of our voices can be heard and represented. And although I am a creator, I have not ever received a gift from a brand. So I was tickled to receive a gift from Tower 28 Beauty, Inc. Thank you!

Taylor Swift takes down Ticketmaster. I called it in November 2022 when her Eras tour launched to utter chaos. Now the Department of Justice is suing live nation to diverse Ticketmaster. It has taken them a year and a half to do the research and file the complaint as well as get the buy-in from 30 states plus the District of Columbia. I believe Live Nation has a monopoly over the live entertainment industry. What are your thoughts?I think this video is too educational and will likely not do well on YouTube. It’s a bit too wordy. I got to 30K subs on YouTube in a year so I have a good feeling about what does well and what doesn’t do well. Although all my videos on Taylor Swift tend to do better. Give me some feedback as I am trying to get back to consistent video content creation.********Day 22/90 posting on LinkedIn.Challenge extended by Ana Juneja This is changing my life by the way, I’ve gained almost 800 new followers in the last 18 days. I asked Ang Lee’s attorney:“What does Ang need?” I’ve been the lead attorney on 22 feature films. At Disney and Skydance. I ask the question most attorneys do not ask:“What does your client need?”“Ang needs money for the technology. He doesn’t care about flying first-classor if his wife visits the set.”This was super helpful. And allows me to close deals. That let me go back to Will Smith’s team and tell them:“We cannot give Will his normal $5M* perq package,We need to reduce it by $2M becauseAng needs it for his technology.”And actors like to help their directors out.So Will had a smaller perq package on Gemini Man.Find out what the other side needs. This applies to your clients every time they come to you with a problem with a question or a deal. I ask my clients all the time, what do you need from this call?Solve their problem, each time.Comes from my training as a performance coach.Listen deeply to understand what your clients need.I ask my creator clients, what do you want to do with your YouTube channel?“Do you want to make videos forever or do you want to exit?”The answer to that question, helps me to orientate every deal and agreement for that client. If s/he wants to exit, we approach deals differently.I will introduce this client to VCs who approach me daily.*Yes, the perq numbers were changed. And yes, many attorneys, lots of those in Hollywood just want to scream and be right. My goal is to close the deal and get my client what they want, I do not need to be right.16 years in Hollywood has taught meto not have an ego. ----------Day 21/90 posting on LinkedIn.Challenge extended by Ana JunejaThis is changing my life by the way, I’ve gained almost 800 new followers in the last 18 days. $25,000 termination fee. Loan shark terms. Unable to break the contract. 50% taxes on the loans. 20% of your AdSense for getting you verified on Snap (that’s not a thing btw). Promises of creators tools and support that disappears after the first month. These are some of the terms that I encounter every single day in the creators economy.Creators call me often upset or scared because they’ve been screwed. Having been in Hollywood for 16 years, I’m shocked by the predators taking advantage of creators. This is why I left Hollywood and made it my life’s mission to protect creators. It’s slow. It’s one creator at a time. But it’s so meaningful. There are so few established Entertainment lawyers willing to do the work.Late at night, I lie awake and I miss my steady paychecks. Worried. But then I have creators who tell me sometimes in tears how grateful they are to me and that having me in their corner means the world. And by the way, those contracts that seem unbreakable? I just broke a huge one for one of my clients. It took a lot of phone calls and emails and I told the other side, let’s go. Let’s go to arbitration or court. I am not scared of you.********Day 20/90 posting on LinkedIn.Challenge extended by Ana Juneja This is changing my life by the way, I’ve gained over 700 new followers in the last 18 days.
