Schroeder of Roslindale, an acclaimed photographer and Boston historian, who died Thursday of a heart attack in his home. He was 76. Born in Hof, Germany, Mr. Schroeder migrated to Boston with his family at the age of 2 and lived in 1 Roslindale for the 1 rest of his life.
He was a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School. During World War II, Mr. Schroeder enlisted in the Navy, serving as a radarman in the 40th Battalion. He saw action in nine major engagements in the Pacific, receiving the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, Mr. Schroeder worked primarily as a photographer. He won hundreds of medals, awards, and trophies for his photography of children, the islands, boats, and military history and sites. His work is on permanent display in the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and i in museums in New York and Paris. He was a member of the Camera Club of Boston; the Photographers School, in Westport, the Photographic Association of Portugal; and the Johannesburg Photographic Society.
In recent years, Mr. Schroeder worked for the Boston Parks Department, researching and documenting the history of the Boston Harbor islands and their role in coastal defense. He worked extensively with the late Boston historian Edward Rowe Snow, and was the primary photographer for many of his books. He leaves his sister, Gerda Schwartz of Cambridge. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.
at the Higgins Funeral Home in Roslindale. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery in West Roxbury. Joseph Sniezek, was WWII veteran Joseph P. Sniezek, a Navy veteran of World War II and Fall River businessman, died Saturday. He was 78.
Mr. Sniezek ran his family's business, the Sugar Bowl, in Fall River, taking it over after his father died in 1954 and operating it until it closed in 1972. For his Navy service, he received the American Theater Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Sniezek was president of the Portsmouth, R.I., Lions Club.
He was a member of the Portsmouth Multipurpose Senior Citizens Center and the Polish American War Veterans. He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth and enjoyed gardening and fishing. Mr. Sniezek was the husband of the late Mary A.
(Maitland) Sniezek. He leaves three daughters, Karen Brown of Cumberland, R.I., Cheryl Loeber of Plainville, and Holly Sniezek of North Kingstown, R.I.; a son, Ralph King of Wakefield, R.I.; a brother, George Sniezek of Tiverton, R.I.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Burial will be private.
